Dame Peggy van Praagh achieved prominence as a dancer, ballet teacher and director. She was born in London in 1910. She pursued a career of dance and joined the Ballet Club (later known as Ballet Rambert) in 1933 before moving to the Sadler's Wells Ballet (1941-1945). In 1959, she was invited to Australia to direct the Boranovsky Ballet. The Australian Ballet was formed in 1962 and van Praagh was Artistic Director from 1972-1974. Modesta Alexandra Gentile was Dame Peggy van Praagh's secretary from September 1968 to December 1969. She maintained a friendship with Dame Peggy until the latter's death in 1990. She worked with the Sydney Film Festival from 1965 to 1977, and became a life member of that organisation. Gentile died in January 2008.
